Director of Underwriting

Aspen MGA – Flower Mound, Texas

The Director of Underwriting is responsible for the Underwriting and Policy Services processes, procedures, and operations. The Director will coordinate Policy Services personnel in a manner that optimizes Aspen’s productivity, improves efficiency, and helps achieve revenue and profitability goals. The Director will serve as an integral member of the senior leadership team.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the management of the Underwriting/Policy Service department
  • Develops, manages and monitors the company’s policy services related policies, practices, workflows, and procedures to secure optimum utilization of resources
  • Manages and monitors productivity reports and staff for optimal efficiency
  • Work with the Allstar Technology (IT) team regarding programming and development of the Aspen policy system and reports
  • Perform agency audits and recommendations to Marketing to ensure healthy agency partnerships
  • Provide daily leadership, mentoring, and coaching to staff
  • Employee audits for quality assurance and coaching opportunities
  • Process performance reviews in accordance with corporate guidelines
  • Interviewing, hiring, disciplining and terminating employees as needed
  • Recommends salary adjustments, promotions, transfers and dismissals
  • Review, respond and track all related TDI complaints
  • Prepare, oversee and carry out all Home State and Re-insurer audit requests
  • Monthly KPI reporting responsibilities
  • Make recommendations regarding policy language that could improve financial results
  • Drives change initiatives to address future-oriented business needs
  • Work extended hours or weekends during high volume periods or after catastrophic events
  • Ensure all job functions are in line with the overall direction of Aspen as set by the President
  • Perform Other Duties as may be assigned

Job Requirements and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Demonstrates effective and diplomatic oral and written communication skills and promotes a favorable company image to the public
  • Demonstrates a high degree of judgment and discretion
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize successfully in a fast paced, high volume environment
  • Ability to attract, maintain, motivate, and retain top talent.
  • Must possess the ability to analyze data
  • Must be proficient with MS Office
  • Relevant insurance designation and/or experience preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of highly successful insurance operational experience
  • Understanding and ability to execute and comply with Texas Department of Insurance Guidelines and Requirements as established in the Insurance Code
